Successful Student Strategies |
Mrs. Carlisle
Spring Semester 2007 |
This class is held two days a week, usually Monday and Wednesday. The other days of the week students will be in study hall or in another class (yearbook). This is the new “6th” hour added this semester to make class sizes smaller in Math and Engineering and more even in the other classes.
Why this class is offered at InTech now: Students have shown a need to be taught how to be more successful in InTech’s rigorous academic program. These skills will help throughout their education.
Objective: Students will understand and use effective study skills and strategies to become responsible, capable learners.
Curriculum:
I. Study skills taught in the context of studying for the classes the students are currently taking.
Examples:
Note taking using Dr. Kawamura’s power point handouts.
Creating flashcards in class to prepare for a POE test.
Creating index card notes in class to use for Science and POE tests.
Learning textbook reading skills using current reading assignments.
Utilizing available online tools for “drill and practice.”
Anticipating what will be on a test.
- Learning (in context) how the brain works and why these study skills work.
- Any homework will be what they should be doing to study for their other classes. These students do not need additional homework, just additional skills.
Materials Needed in Class each Day:
Binder (The one that is required for all of your classes, not a new one.)
5 dividers for the binder (pocket would be best)
School Planner (that was given you at the beginning of school)
1 pkg. of 3 X 5 index cards
5 clip rings
Colored Pencils
A BOOK TO READ
Grading:
Students will be worked hard for the time they are in this class. Grades will be given on participation and effective time use in class. There will be a number of point opportunities given. For example:
Daily warm up
Quizzes
Participation & Completion of class project for the day.
Binder Checks
Planner Checks
Having materials in class
There will sometimes be extra point possibilities, which may individualized and may include:
Improvement in a core class.
____ number of math assignments turned in on time in a row
Showing me a completed note index card ready for a test.
A = 90-100% of point opportunities (You must also be doing well or improving in other classes to get an A in this class.)
B = 80-89% of point opportunities
C = 70-79% of point opportunities
Fail = less then 70% of point opportunities
Absences: Many of the things we do cannot be made up. The student will receive points for these as they show me that all missed work in their other classes was made up within a week.
What do I do when I’ve completed the in-class project for the day and there is still class time left?
- Check over the work you’ve done that day.
- Homework or studying for other classes.
- READ THE BOOK YOU BROUGHT WITH YOU.
This is not a visiting time. We will do work in groups, but I expect you to be working the entire time you are in my classroom.
